Approved by the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, Osteoporosis Australia, The Australasian College of Dermatologists and The Cancer Council Australia
New guidelines on sun exposure and vitamin D deficiency have been recently released. Importantly these guidelines were developed from experts in both the skin cancer and osteoporosis fields. These guidelines will help inform Australians about how much sun they need to avoid vitamin D deficiency and at the same time stay healthy without increasing their risk of skin cancer. |

Men warned of osteoporosis problems |

Not just a woman's problem
A McMaster University researcher is alerting men and their doctors that osteoporosis isn't just a woman's problem but that the bone-wasting disease can severely afflict them, too.
To overcome this common perception, Dr. Aliya A. Khan, a professor of clinical medicine, led a group of five Canadian experts in the development of guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and management of osteoporosis in men. Their paper appears in the January 30 issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ). |

Government announces changes to osteoporosis medication and bone density testing
From 1 April 2007, a common osteoporosis medication, alendronate, will be available on the PBS for people aged 70 years and over who have a bone density of minus 3 (very low bone density). |
